Meditation: Sage Principles for Leadership
By Lorraine Alexander, DASA Meditation
NorthBay biz magazine - Guest column, May 2017

Learn how meditation cultivates leadership naturally.
Leadership is an essential skill in the new bustling business environment. Some individuals believe leadership is about convincing others to join in on their way of thinking. But leadership is not about getting your way—leadership is far from that. It begins with accepting that everyone has a voice. True leaders have the willingness to be present and listen. They know they must first learn how to follow well before becoming successful as a leader.

Meditation, the best-kept secret.
By Lorraine Alexander

Why do so many of America's top executives practice meditation? Time is valuable, yet executives prioritize this practice twice daily. Meditation develops and improves personal skills and awareness. The three top attributes that will contribute to a leading edge are creativity, emotional intelligence, and focus.

Can we change our life experience?

By Lorraine Alexander

Americans have become accustomed to a stressful lifestyle. We know stress affects health, sleep, emotions and behavior.  How can we change this pattern?

There is a quote by Charles R. Swindoll "Life is 10 percent what happens to you, and 90 percent how you react to it." Have you ever noticed that people often react to the same stressors quite differently? While one person is deeply affected by a stressful event, another may take it in stride. Why? The answer is simple. Some of us have found our way back to that place of balance.

Sustaining the Body, Mind, and Spirit Through Meditation

Meditation: The New Sustainable Practice
By Lorraine Alexander, DASA Meditation

Memory and learning naturally decrease as we age.
Meditation can help combat this trend.
During the past decade, I’ve heard the word “sustainable” used almost exclusively in the context of environmental issues. Yet the term simply means the ability to last or continue for a long time, without depleting resources. A personal resource is an available means that’s afforded by the mind, or by one's personal capabilities—a source of supply, support or aid, especially one that can be readily drawn upon when needed. Shouldn't health and brain function be considered a source of support?

Chasing Harmony: Raising the Human Spirit through Meditation

"Nature will not let us stay in any one place for too long. She will let us stay just long enough to gather the experience necessary to the unfolding and advancement of the soul. This is a wise provision, for should we stay there too long, we would become too set, too rigid, too inflexible. Nature demands change in order that we may advance.” – Ernest Holmes

After the hustle bustle of three connecting flights and two hours in traffic, I finally arrived home. It felt like someone poured a bucket of stress over me.

Hazmat protocol 101: stress cleanup

I’ll admit the hectic pace of travel, coupled with a three-day intensive training was rigorous, even for me. It took me awhile to shake it off, but finally, I regained my balance, my harmony, my groove. On occasion, life just seems to have it’s own way of challenging us to the extreme.

As a long-time meditator, I was reminded of how well meditation combats fatigue, stress, and feelings of being challenged.  During my trip, my meditations were surface - not nearly as deep as usual, which was an indication that I was out of sorts and under stress. But once I returned home, and had time to get back into my routine, I returned to those deep meditations quickly.  And with those deeper, more profound meditations, I found my peaceful, happy, content feelings returned.  The stress had finally melted away.

Meditation: Can it Curb Impulse Eating?

In today’s busy world, we have too many demands and not enough quality time for family—and even less time to care for ourselves. We find ourselves in an unhealthy spiral, eating out of control. Often, we don't understand how we got there in the first place.

What triggers bad choices—emotions, fatigue?

If you're finding yourself reaching for an instant fix of comfort food, sugar, or anything quick, you're most likely making poor choices in your diet. This momentary lapse in good judgment could be caused by fatigue or stress. Meditation just may be the vehicle that breaks this unhealthy spiral.

"When practiced with consistency, meditation has been shown to greatly improve willpower and concentration. This is a prime example of neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to change. Meditation has also been shown to alter the brain's gray matter. This may be a big part of the reason why practitioners often experience significant improvements in memory, sense of self, empathy, and stress, according to a new study led by Harvard researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital." -Meditation and the Power of the Brains Plasticity, November 2015 Mind Body Vortex
Suppress impulse eating

Speaking from firsthand experience, poor choices in eating will only offer a temporary spike in energy. In the end, it can deplete your energy and add unwanted pounds as you load up on empty calories. More importantly, a diet lacking essential nutrients, high in sugar or fat is highly addictive - and according to reports, a hazard to our health. How can we break this spiral? Could meditation be the answer?

There are many hot buttons that can trigger poor food choices including stress, fatigue, emotional challenges, or simply not having enough time or energy to prepare healthy meals. That’s when we reach for that easy instant boost. When we feel this urge, we want (and need) immediate satisfaction— that junk food or sugar high.

We've all seen the image of a light bulb associated with an original idea. But, what if many lights or original ideas came to us often - offering a constant stream of ingenuity.  How might that change our life - our career?
Meditation and Creativity

The Game Changer...When all the Lights Come On

Most of us feel fortunate to happen upon one great idea every so often. But what if your creativity was greatly improved?  Would your life experience be different if you found that many ideas came to you with ease?  What if you had access to these great ideas throughout the day? Maybe you would find a new approach to help your family or a better way to solve a problem at work. You might even dream up a more efficient and fun approach to your daily routine, to planning the perfect date, or a new approach to a client presentation. Could ramping up your creativity improve your personal life, your career, your enjoyment of life? Wouldn't that be a game-changer?

Can Meditation Help Avoid Burnout?

Meditation helps nurses focus and regain control of their careers and personal lives, and many nurses experience deep relaxation when meditating.  Meditation has a rich, vast history and is one way to engender a relaxation response, which can help nurses deal with their stress (Everly & Lating, 2013).

50+ - It's Your Time to Shine.

If you're over 50, according to AARP you’ve arrived. You’re officially in the beginning of your golden years.  If you fit into this age group, you might view meditation as a somewhat abstract practice.  You might even say, "I’m too old to try something new like that."  You could be afraid, assuming it is difficult to learn, or you might worry that you could never contort your body into that pretzel-like lotus position.

Five Rules for Bliss-Filled Meditations

1. SCHEDULE YOUR MEDITATIONS TWICE A DAY
Most practiced meditators agree, that much like exercise, if you don't plan or create a ritual at the same time of day, it's just too easy to put a meditation off.  A good suggestion is to preset reminders on your iPhone. Remember, you are in essence training your brain - just as you would train for a race. Regular practice offers profound benefits.
